2011 update - Information on the City of Plantation, FL
Plantation is a city in Broward County, Florida. The city's name comes from the prior owner of the land, the Everglades Plantation Company. The official motto of Plantation is "The Grass is Greener." The city of Plantation has a total area of 22.8 square miles (57 km2).
Plantation is located in central Broward County, part of the South Florida metropolitan area. It is bordered by Lauderhill to the northeast, Sunrise to the north and west, Davie to the south, and Fort Lauderdale to the east. Plantation is 20 miles north of Miami/Dade County and 15 minutes from Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and Port Everglades.
Plantation has 42 parks and playgrounds (totaling 414 acres), including an Equestrian Center, the Aquatics Complex, 6 golf courses including the City’s own Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club, extensive recreation programs for all ages, including tennis, swimming, baseball, football, soccer, track and jogging.
The residents of Plantation incorporated to provide control over building and to keep other cities from coming in and taking over their area. When the Sunshine State Parkway, the Florida Turnpike, was opened, there was an increase of population and development, and the City of Plantation annexed to the west. Zoning ordinances require green spaces around buildings and require buffer zones among differing types of structures.
Today, Plantation has a population of 86,000+, with 55 diverse cultures and major employers that include American Express, Motorola, Florida Power and Light, Plantation General Hospital and West side Regional Medical Center, DHL's World Headquarters for the Americas, American Intercontinental University. The Esperanto Language Institute headquarters are located in Plantation.
Plantation has one of the few municipal libraries in a county where most libraries are regionally operated. Although Plantation was born as a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, its charm, beauty of natural surroundings, and prime location near major roadways have caused it to grow into a flourishing city in its own right.
The City of Plantation joined forces with Broward County Transit to encourage more people to utilize public transportation and increase the number of destinations that can be reached through public transportation. The City of Plantation's bus service, known as the Plantation Tram, is designed to work in conjunction with Broward County Transit Routes 2, 12, 18, 22, 30, 40, 56, 75 81, and 88. Plantation Tram is free of charge, but riders who make connections to Broward County Transit routes are expected to pay the associated fares.
The estimated $350 million project to replace the Fashion Mall is a major part of Plantation Midtown, an 850-acre (3.4 km2) urban center that is expected to help turn Plantation into a regional destination. Plantation has embraced mixed-use in its master plan for the Midtown area.
Plantation hosts a Farmers Market featuring fresh, certified organic produce, locally produced honey, homemade hummus, plants and orchids, fresh cut flowers, breads and Danishes, olive oils, cheeses, dips, spreads and more. It is located at Volunteer Park, on Saturdays, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM and runs year round.

Plantation is also home to the Mosaic Theatre, a professional theater company in South Florida dedicated to making a difference through classical, contemporary, and original works as well as presenting thought-provoking, innovative theater.
