Miramar is a city in Broward County, Florida. The city was named after the Miramar district of Havana, Cuba. The population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 108,240. It is part of the South Florida metropolitan area, with a total area of 31 square miles(80 km2).
Miramar's official motto is "Beauty and Progress," updated from the earlier-used "The Center of Everything".
Miramar loosely translates from Spanish as "sea view" or "sea sight," though it is not located directly on the Atlantic Ocean.
The city limits are: north: Pembroke Pines, northeast: Hollywood, east: West Park (US 441), south: Miami-Dade County (County Line Rd.) and west: ½ mi. W. of U.S. 27 (Everglades Conservation Area)
Situated in southwestern Broward County, Miramar is 14 miles in length from east to west and 2.5 miles in width. It is the third largest city in Broward County in terms of land size and the 5th largest city in Broward in terms of population.
The City of Miramar has 22 neighborhood parks, one regional park and nine community parks, two water treatment plants, one wastewater treatment plant, and all other services necessary for the health and welfare of its residents. Miramar Community Services Department is dedicated to providing a wide variety of services, recreational activities and special events for residents of all ages, through its divisions: Administration, Athletics, Recreation, Aquatics, Special Events. The Administration is located in the brand new Civic Center Place (City Hall).
Miramar has been awarded the National Recognition of “Tree City USA” for its accomplishments in Landscaping and Beautification of the City.
The City of Miramar was incorporated with a population of less than 200 people. Miramar was founded by one person, A. L. Mailman to serve as a “bedroom” community for Miami and Fort Lauderdale. He bought the land and built 56 inexpensive homes of concrete and flat roofs on the property, which sold quickly and the City of Miramar was born.
Although erratic expansion is common in new towns, Miramar’s early City fathers dvocated the philosophy of planned and controlled growth. Miramar is considered a leader in South Florida in development of effective land use controls, having adopted a Comprehensive Land Use Plan before cities and counties were mandated to do so. “With 2/3 of land not yet developed, the decision to guide and control Miramar’s growth remains a wise one.”
Re-Development is currently concentrated in the eastern quarter of the City of Miramar, which has been largely built out. The availability of large tracts of land, with access to major transportation networks and nearby labor markets, offers and excellent opportunity for residential, office park, industrial, and commercial development. The major airports and seaports, colleges, shopping, cultural centers and beaches are all located within a short driving distance of Miramar.
Miramar is a part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood media market, hosting both an English as well a Spanish TV station.
