Information when moving to the City of Deerfield Beach
Deerfield Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, with an estimated population of 76,478+, it is part of the South Florida metropolitan area.
The city is named for the numerous deer that once grazed along the Hillsboro River, which forms the northern boundary of Deerfield. The City of Deerfield Beach was born when a post office was established to serve a population of 20 settlers who worked in the expansion of the Florida Railroad. The intersection of today’s Hillsboro Boulevard and Dixie Highway was the focus of Deerfield’s first businesses ( four or five stores, a lodge, the post office and the Australian and the Pioneer Hotels). But the key to the village’s economy lay at the produce shed adjacent to the railway depot. The Town of Deerfield incorporated and George Emory Butler, Jr. was elected as the first mayor.
Deerfield was primarily an agricultural community, but soon tourists began to discover its scenic oceanfront. The burgeoning tourism industry was evidenced by the new proliferation of hotels and motels along the shoreline. Nowadays the economy is heavily diversified and includes distribution, manufacturing and office industries as well.
The City of Deerfield Beach Parks and Recreation Department has been vital to the lifeblood of the community through 266 developed acres at 30 sites. The City of Deerfield Beach developed a 25-year Parks and Recreation System Master Plan.
Deerfield Beach’s amenities include the Blue Wave award winning beach, a gymnasium, several outdoor basketball courts, a roller hockey rink, tennis courts and tot lots, mini parks, nature preserves and community parks.
The Department sponsors a wide variety of special events throughout the year including the Annual Festival of the Arts, Mango Festival, Volleyball Tournaments, and Moonlight Melodies Summer Beach Concerts.
The City of Deerfield Beach also established a Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The CRA was tasked with utilizing tax increment financing (TIF) to creatively partner with the private sector to increase investment in the CRA district as well as upgrade the area’s public infrastructure. Some of the projects include the boardwalk extension and the construction of condos, restaurants, shopping centers, etc.
The City’s website www.deerfield-beach.com provides a vast array of information, including beach and weather conditions, as well as lots of recreational, social and cultural programs available at Deerfield’s community centers. Online registration is also available through the website.
