Information on the City of Coral Gables
Coral Gables or The Gables is known as the home of the University of Miami, has a total area of 96.2 km2 (37.2 mi2) and in 2010 its population was 62,871.
Created in 1925 by George Merrick, Coral Gables is one of the nation's first fully-planned communities. Early city planners and visionaries were influenced by the aesthetics of the City Beautiful Movement that swept across America in the early 1900's. Merrick’s city plan set aside residential areas, business, industrial and craft subdivisions, recreational and country club areas including tennis courts, bridle paths, parks and golf courses. The city's architecture is almost entirely Mediterranean Revival Style.
Coral Gables is notorious for its aesthetic codes, the same policies that made the city a success at its creation guide today policies. Coral Gables planners protected the residential sectors, preserve the environment and maintain its international flavors.
In 4 years Merrick’s vision became reality and in 1925 Coral Gables was incorporated, 600 homes were built as well as 80 miles of side walk, properties in the amount of $7 million were sold and 65 miles of roads were constructed, following the Florida land boom of the 1920.
But the hurricane of 1926 and the following economic depression put a halt to land development. During World War II a new life came into the city of Coral Gables, the Pan America Airline leased its Coral Gables-based airport and hangar facilities with the US Navy. Unused buildings were occupied by thousands of mechanics, navy pilots and soldiers for housing and training. The 1950’s brought a new era of development to Coral Gables with the revival of the Miracle Mile. Large Latin American and Caribbean companies relocated to Coral Gables.
For three decades now, Coral Gables has expanded its economic base. Situated just 10 minutes and 4 miles from Miami International Airport, it is home to 175 multinationals, 26 consulates, around 140 dining establishments and gourmet shops, more than 30 fine art galleries, trade offices and international retailers.
Coral Gables, also known as "The City Beautiful" , has been at the forefront of energy efficiency and green initiatives for over 10 years. Coral Gables received the 2007 Protector of the Climate Award from the Broward Audubon Society as a recognition of its continuing green efforts.
George Merrick founded Coral Gables with an artistic flare. Today the City Beautiful has the highest concentration of live theater in Miami-Dade County and offers an unparalleled array of performing and visual arts.
Coral Gables cultural landscape is unequaled by any city of its size in the world because of its historical sites, theaters, gardens, museums, galleries and one-of-a-kind festivals. Those are the reasons why Coral Gables official website says: “With world class cultural opportunities, Coral Gables truly is an art lover’s paradise.” “It’s Not Just Miami, It’s Coral Gables.... Those Who Know, Know The Difference”.
