Aventura is a planned city located in northeastern Miami-Dade County, Florida. According to the U.S. Census estimates of 2010 / 2011, the city has a population of 35,475. Aventura's area is 3.2 square miles, located on the Intracoastal Waterway in northeast Miami-Dade County. Aventura is surrounded by Hallandale Beach, Sunny Isles Beach, Golden Beach and North Miami Beach.
A major part of the present city of Aventura was initially swampland called Biscayne Gardens. It was developed by the Oxford Development Company. The city of Aventura was planned as a high-rise residential area. The city name is from the Spanish word for "adventure," and was named "Aventura" because that was the name of the original group of condominium developments in the area. The name predates the well known mall (Aventura Mall) built near the condominium developments.
Aventura, one of Miami-Dade's newest communities, was incorporated on November 7, 1995 and is a young, vibrant, full-service municipality with a diverse demographic base and is recognized internationally as a premier location in which to live, shop and play. Conveniently located between two international airports (Miami International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport) and two international seaports (Port of Miami and Port Everglades), it's easy to see why Aventura is the right place in which to do business.
Aventura is home to the Aventura Mall, a 2.4 million square foot indoor shopping center located in the center of the city. The Aventura Mall has attracted many upscale retail stores and restaurants, making it one of the most popular shopping malls in the state of Florida. The enormous success of the mall encouraged explosive growth in the area and saw the closure of stores at the competing The Mall at 163rd Street, which only recently has been revitalized. The Aventura Express shuttle bus is a city run public bus service, free to Aventura residents. The Miami-Dade Transit and Broward County Transit bus systems also run through the city. The main north-south road in the city of Aventura is Biscayne Boulevard and the main east-west route is the William H. Lehman Causeway. Although no interstates run through Aventura, I-95 is just 5 minutes away.
Aventura is an upscale condo community with some of South Florida's best-known large-scale condominium projects and apartment buildings. Restaurants, movie theaters and Malls are convenient nearby and downtown Fort Lauderdale and Miami are just 20 minutes away. Aventura is served by the Miami- Ft. Lauderdale market for local radio and Television. Aventura has its own newspaper, Aventura News, which is published weekly and is part of Miami's Community Newspapers, " The Voice of the Community". The town has a magazine named Aventura and is served by The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and the Sun-Sentinel.
Aventura also has its own exclusive park, Founders Park, and an outdoor mall named the Shops at Waterways. Although not inside the city limits, some of south Florida's finest beaches are just a few minutes away from Aventura, across the William H. Lehman Causeway. Since the City of Aventura incorporation millions of dollars have been spent on infrastructure improvements including streets, sidewalks, lighting, park development, beautification projects, drainage, pedestrian and safety improvements, including a state-of-the-art Government Center, a Community/Recreation Center situated on 2.8 acres of land in a park like setting on the waterfront, the first municipal-run charter school in Miami-Dade County. In order to address the growing number of families with school age children, the Aventura City Commission chose to take an aggressive approach to meet its changing demographics. Doors opened to the Aventura City of Excellence School in the Fall of 2003 which is adjacent to the new Community Recreation Center. The 45,000 square foot state-of-the-art school serves 900 Aventura school children from kindergarten to 8th grade.
Aventura Arts & Cultural Center is an elegant high-tech facility and was inaugurated to provide a wide range of performing arts and cultural programming options to South Florida residents.
