Moving Guide and Information about Boca Raton Boca Raton is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida incorporated as a town in May 1925. As of 2004, the City had 83,960 residents. Boca Raton is the 25th most populous city in the State of Florida, and the second largest city in Palm Beach County. The City's area is 29.6 square miles, with the park system covering more than 1,000 acres and 5 miles of ocean front. The meaning of the name Boca Raton has always aroused curiosity. Many people wrongly assume the name is simply Rat’s Mouth. The Spanish word boca (or mouth) often described an inlet, while raton (literally mouse) was used as a term for a cowardly thief. But the “Thieves Inlet,” Boca Ratones, appeared on 18th century maps associated with an inlet in the Biscayne Bay area of Miami. By the beginning of the 19th century, the term was mistakenly applied to Lake Boca Raton, whose inlet was closed at the time. The “s” and later the “e” were dropped from this title by the 1920s, yet the correct pronunciation remains Rah-tone. The earliest known inhabitants of the Boca Raton area were the Tequesta Indians, who lived in communities near the ocean for about one thousand years. The construction of the Florida East Coast Canal (today’s Intracoastal) and the Florida East Coast Railway in the 1890s made the region accessible to a group of pioneers. By the early 1900s Boca Raton was a tiny agricultural community, specialized in pineapple cultivation. Amongst these were a group of Japanese immigrants under the leadership of Joseph Sakai, who formed a community along today’s Yamato Road in 1904. The City of Boca Raton's early history during the Florida land boom of the 1920s was as the site of Addison Mizner's Cloister Inn in 1927, and today is a city landmark as the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Mizner had a vision to transform Boca Raton from an agricultural town into a thriving resort community, planned in every aspect. In the 1930s and 40s, Boca Raton was known for its winter vegetable crop, particularly the green beans which commanded a premium in northern markets. In 1942, the Army Air Corps established its only war-time radar training school at the site of what is today F.A.U. and the Boca Raton Airport. The facility brought over 30,000 servicemen as well as families and civilian employees to the tiny community of Boca Raton, with a population of 723 in 1940. In the 1960s, South Florida experienced another great land boom, with developments pushing the Everglades and former farmlands increasingly westward. In 1962, Boca Raton attracted the newest state university, Florida Atlantic, to the site of the old army airbase. IBM moved one of its computer facilities to Boca Raton in 1967, and in 1981, it was there that the first IBM PC, or personal computer, was developed. During the 1980s and 1990s, Boca Raton focused much of its attention on downtown redevelopment, and a number of important historical properties, such as Boca Raton’s original Town Hall and F.E.C. Railway Station were restored and opened to the public. Many fine cultural facilities, such as the Boca Raton Museum of Art, have grown up to meet the needs of the growing population. Today the city of Boca Raton is home to 80,000 residents within city limits and another 120,000 in “West Boca." It’s the core of the south Palm Beach County metropolitan community, offering beautiful parks and facilities, economic opportunities, and a excellent quality of life. The City of Boca Raton provides police services, fire-rescue services, municipal services, recreation services (parks, beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, a library and a municipal swimming pool), and utility services. Boca Raton is known nationally and internationally as an originator in the area of comprehensive zoning. The sign code, which was initiated in the late 1960s, gives Boca Raton a unique look with minimal commercial intrusion into landscaping and streetscapes. Boca Raton has a strict development code, including the size and types of commercial buildings, building signs and advertisements which may be erected within the city limits. The City’s Recreation Services Department and the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, maintain over 1,500 acres of parks, trails and recreation facilities including 31 parks, 3 community centers, 3 tennis centers, 3 golf courses, 2 libraries, multi-purpose trails, 2 pools, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Serenoa Glade Preserve, Children's Science Explorium, Science Playground, Willow Theater, Mizner Bark Dog Park. In addition, the City operates 2.5 miles of oceanfront beaches. Boca Raton is home to the Caldwell Theatre Company, the longest-running professional theater in South Florida. The City of Boca Raton is known for its affluent social community and high income demographic. Boca Raton has a large Jewish and South American population, which includes a large demographic from Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. Boca Raton was the site of two now vanished amusement parks, Africa U.S.A. (1953-1961) and Ancient America (1953-1959). Africa U.S.A. was a wild animal park in which the tourists rode a "Jeep Safari Train" through the park. There were no fences separating the animals from the tourists on the "Jeep Safari Train". It is now the Camino Gardens subdivision one mile west of the Boca Raton Hotel. Ancient America was built surrounding a real Indian burial mound. Today, the mound is still visible within the Boca Marina & Yacht Club neighborhood on U.S. 1 near Yamato Road.
