Hints about moving a Piano
When you move your piano it will need to be tuned up. Caracteristics of the new room will interfere with its tunning. Humidity of the new room is the factor that is most likely to interfere with the piano tunning.
You should not have the piano tuned as soon as you move it. Allow some weeks for the piano's wood to interact with the humidity of the new place, then have the piano tuned.
Because the Grand or Baby Grand piano must sit on its side for transportation, the piano keys can shift and get stuck. If this happens, the piano may not be played until the piano techinician realigns them. Stuck keys do not mean the piano is broken, they may simply have shifted during transportation. Although this is unlikely, it does sometimes happen.
Prior to the move, you may have the piano action locked for transportation. After it is moved a technician must unlock it.
Have all your sheet music taken out of the piano stool before the moving day. This will prevent it from falling off the stool and getting wrinkled or mixed up.
When shipping your piano off shore, have it crated in a wood crate, totaly closed and sealed. Make sure to place anti-humidity products in the crate since shipping containers allow for humidity to get through. Warehouses where the container stays waiting for customs release also tend to be humid, further risking damage to the piano if anti-humidity products are not used.
